Why Paint Alone Can't Hide Drywall Damage

A lot of drywall is manufactured each year. In fact, according to the Gypsum Association, more than 20 billion square feet, or roughly 717 square miles, are made in North America. While it can hold up well if the home drywall installer does a great job, it can get damaged. While some people might just want to paint over it, that isn't the only way to hide the damage. Here's why.

The Damage Can Continue Behind the Paint

Putting paint over certain types of drywall damage isn't a good idea since it can mask the main issue. If it's damage that won't worsen over time, then you may consider painting it, but you won't know without professional advice. If something is happening beneath that paintwork, then it might keep you from knowing what's happening until it's too late.

Sanding Down Can Help Too

This depends on the type of damage that happened to the drywall. Was it due to something hitting it or are there cracks? You might be able to sand it down and then apply the new paint. Be sure that you use the same color as before, otherwise, the damage is going to stand out and show that something was fixed. Your goal is to make it look like regular drywall.

With that said, the best thing to do is talk with your home drywall installer. They will be able to tell you the best way to make repairs and to hide any drywall damage that doesn't require repairs. If there are a lot of cracks or the cracks are pretty wide, then you need to have a professional repair them. Otherwise, you risk long-term damage to your home as well as structural weakness that can lead to major repair work being needed.

Aside from your roof, the integrity of your walls is the next most important part of your house. You don't want anything weakening it. You might put yourself in danger if you just mask any damage with paint. Always have an expert regularly inspect your home so that they can look for anything like water damage. That way, you'll feel safe and secure.
