How To Paint Your Drywall

residential drywall
Your new walls are finished! Now it’s time to paint. Of course, after you have spent all that time putting up your drywall you want it to be flawless. Painting your residential drywall doesn’t have to be a chore. Keep in mind that it can be even more beneficial to hire a residential interior painting service. Low-cost paint will require you to put on more coats and unfortunately they will fade. You will want to make sure your drywall is sanded to your exact preference. Know that with drywall, what you see is going to be your final result. The paint will not fill cracks or smooth out any rough edges!

1. Prep your drywall
As mentioned before, you will want to make sure your drywall is smooth. In order to conduct any kind of interior painting on your residential drywall, you will want to make sure you cover any nails or screws with compound or masking tape. After all, a smooth wall makes for a smooth coat of paint.

2. Prime your drywall
After you have smoothed over your drywall and dusted it to get any loose or grainy debris off, you will want to select a primer. Your primer will help seal the drywall, preventing any water or humidity from affecting the surface. It will also cover any irregularities in the surface that you might have missed. Lastly, it will provide a coat for the paint to adhere to.

Polyvinyl acetate (PVA) is designed specifically for residential drywall. Latex paint is also an effective primer. Latex paint is dry to the touch in about two to three hours and it should be safe for a second coat in about four to five hours. When priming your walls, you should choose a primer that roughly matches the color of your final paint color. It doesn’t have to be an exact match. If you are using light paint for your second coat, you do not want to use a dark color for your primer.

3. Paint your drywall
After you have applied the primer to your residential drywall, you will, of course, have to let it dry. Add any additional coats, and then once it has fully dried you will want to go over it with sandpaper. Any residential interior painting service will tell you that making sure you’re painting on a smooth surface will give your wall a more polished look. If you worked so hard to put that drywall up yourself, you’ll certainly want it to look amazing when everything is said and done.

You have primed your wall, sanded it down, and you’re ready to paint! You’ll want to get your rollers, your designated painting shirt and go to town. Remember to tape down any edges you don’t want to be painted with some painters tape. Then, simply apply the paint, let it dry, and add additional coats as necessary. Congratulations! You successfully painted your drywall.

Closing remarks
